Cybersecurity: computer threats are real!

Cyber threats are plentiful and cyber attacks are multiplying by the day. In this context, what can you do to protect yourself? Cybersecurity, also known as computer and digital security or information systems security (ISS), is an important practice in the digital age.

It consists of protecting critical systems and sensitive information from cyber attacks. Cybersecurity measures are put in place to combat threats to networked systems and applications; whether those threats come from inside or outside an organization. (source: IBM).

Cybercriminals take advantage of vulnerabilities or weaknesses in the computer systems and web applications used by the company. After exploiting a vulnerability, a cyber attack can execute malicious code, install malware and even steal sensitive data.

Prevention is better than cure, as cyberattacks can be costly to the company and pose risks to its customers and partners. In 2020, the average cost of a data breach was $3.86 million (US) worldwide. These costs are related to the expense of discovering and responding to the breach; downtime and lost revenue, but also long-term damage to a company's reputation and brand. (source: IBM).

Cybersecurity: what are cybercriminals targeting?

Information, of course! Information is gold. First, they steal personally identifiable information from customers - names, addresses, national identification numbers (social security numbers, tax codes) and credit card information. Then, they sell these records on underground digital markets or threaten to make them public if the company does not agree to pay them a ransom.

This puts the business at risk, because compromised personal information often leads to loss of customer trust, regulatory fines and even legal action.

Some examples of cyberattacks

In this first quarter of 2022, 190 gigabytes of sensitive data were spoofed from Samsung by the cybercriminal group Lapsus$, via a security breach. This includes source codes of certain technologies and algorithms. Recently, the graphics chip maker, Nvidia Corporation, also suffered a cyberattack.

Cyberattacks at international organizations operating in various fields have proliferated during 2021 as well. For example, Microsoft Exchange, Colonial Pipeline, Kaseya, CNA Financial, AXA Partners and Acer. In France, apart from companies, several city halls (Annecy, Angers, La Rochelle) and local institutions have even been affected.

Cyber risk is now part of the daily life of companies and that is why vigilance is required. Organizations that have defined a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy; governed by best practices and automated with advanced analytics, among other techniques, are better able to effectively combat cyber threats and reduce the lifecycle and impact of breaches when they occur.
